When Stress Becomes Your Baseline
Your Nervous System, forgotten how to Calm Down?
Let me ask you something, Has your doctor ever told you they are worried about your stress level affecting your health?
I’ve got to say, in all my years of practice the year of 2026 has brought me more clients who have said “my doctor is concerned about my stress,” “my doctor thinks my condition is exacerbated by stress,” “my doctor said I NEED better stress management.”
I’m really passionate about this because I think this is where we have to take some self-responsibility. Learning how to calm down should be an important life skill!
When Your System Stays in Overdrive
What I think I’ve learned as a practitioner is it seems the nervous system can forget how to get back to baseline (calm). Extended periods of stress can get the whole system stuck in overdrive even when your system should be signaling that it's “down time” and there's no need to be hypervigilant (when you get home from work, the weekend, vacation, sleep).
Reminding Your System What Calm Feels Like
Again, just my opinion but I think when we choose activities and invest in practices that restore our sense of calm, we remind the nervous system where the baseline is and how we can achieve it in daily life. That way when you come home from work your system actually recognizes you are in your safe space, it's time to dial down ten notches and have a restful sleep so you can take on the day tomorrow.
